Counselling &
Psychotherapy in Cape Town

Individual therapy for adults, in-person and online.

Cultivating Growth and Clarity

You may be seeking a deeper understanding of yourself and your place in the world, and would like to feel more at ease. Working together in therapy offers a supportive and confidential space to explore your experiences. This can facilitate insight and self-compassion, creating a new path forward. At the heart of our work together is co-creating a safe and mutually respectful therapeutic relationship. I believe that each person has the potential for growth, healing, and deepening self-understanding.

Dr Robyn Poole

MBChB (UCT), MA Psychotherapy (UK)

I am a registered general practitioner, with a counselling and psychotherapy private practice in the Foreshore area of Cape Town. My practice offers individual therapy to adults over 18 years, in a comfortable and private setting. I offer both short-term counselling and long-term psychotherapy.

My intention is to provide a collaborative environment where we can explore your experiences with a sense of curiosity, and find meaning together. I believe that we all have a core of innate health and well-being, which is present and accessible under the right conditions.

I assist people in navigating various aspects of their lives, and have a special interest in working with stress, life transitions, illness, and supporting personal growth. My foundation is deeply grounded in a mindfulness-based and psychodynamic approach to therapy, which is adapted to each person’s circumstances.

Areas I Work With

I have experience working with people across a wide range of areas, including some of the following:

  • Stress is a natural response to situations where you feel overwhelmed, and finding it hard to cope. This can cause tension, anxiety, and pressure, which can affect many areas of your daily life, such as relationships, work, sleep, and your overall sense of physical and emotional well-being.

Working together in therapy is about exploring patterns and experiences without judgment; this can support your understanding of yourself, and cultivate a sense of balance.

  • We all go through transitions - these are turning points or significant changes that can affect many aspects of your life, such as career, relationships, health, or living situation. These changes can be planned or unexpected, and bring up a wide range of emotions, as well as some new perspectives.

The therapeutic space offers an opportunity for reflection and exploration. As you engage with this process, you may navigate these transitions with more understanding and ease.

  • Living with a chronic health condition can be challenging and feel isolating. I offer a holistic approach, combining my medical and therapeutic training.

In therapy, we work together to support you in coping with the impact of chronic illness on your life. My intention is to offer a calm space, where you can openly explore your unique experiences and cultivate deeper self-compassion.

  • Our sense of self is fluid and constantly evolving. We are all interconnected and affected by each other, our personal circumstances and the larger society in which we live. A sense of belonging is a fundamental human need.

In the therapeutic relationship, we can explore your identity, history, and values, and work together to deepen your understanding of yourself and your place in the world.

  • We are all shaped by early life experiences, which continue to affect how we relate to ourselves and the world. Through therapy, you can explore your beliefs, patterns, and conditions, and cultivate deeper self-awareness.

My practice is rooted in a mindfulness-based approach, which guides this gentle enquiry, and helps you tune into your thoughts, feelings, and bodily sensations in the present moment - with acceptance. This can offer new insights, possibilities, and choices.

Roots of Resilience

We all face challenges, experience loss, and navigate change at some point in our lives. You may reach out to start therapy when you feel stuck or uncertain, or simply to understand yourself better.

I offer a grounded therapy relationship where there is space to reflect on what is happening in your life.

As we explore your experiences and context, you may gain a deeper sense of awareness and clarity. We work together at a pace and timing that feels right for you.
